April — Cutios and the Xana
Springs and the renewal of the land shape this symbolic introduction to April.
April brings water and a spring that has not quite made up its mind. Showers and sudden clearings are common along the coast and in the valleys; it can still be cold in the mountains. Rain fills streams and waters meadows, while new leaves and flowers begin to emerge between the clouds.
The month: the land turns green again
Asturian spring is not a blanket of sunshine: it is mud on paths, water running along roadsides and shoots appearing in their own time. Springs, rivers and wash-houses have been places of work and gathering. Water is more than scenery; it sustains daily life and deserves care.
The voice of the spring: the Xana
The Xana is a female figure in Asturian legends, associated with springs, rivers and enchanted places. In some stories she appears as beautiful and mysterious; in others, an encounter brings a test or danger. There is no single version. Imagine someone hearing a voice beside a spring at dusk: the story turns a familiar place into one full of questions.
The Xana belongs to Asturian folklore. It is not a scientific explanation of water, and there is no evidence that she was a Celtic goddess.
Cutios and the ancient calendar
Cutios is a name written in the Coligny calendar, a Gaulish inscription found in France. We do not know for certain what it means or whether it corresponds to April. Its association with the Xana is a literary image in this series, not a demonstrated historical tradition.
