Editorial illustration of rain and new shoots in the landscape

March does not tiptoe into Asturias: one day the sky may clear, and the next brings back rain and wind. Spring begins on the calendar, but snow may remain on the peaks and the coastal air can still feel cool. The season changes gradually, not all at once.

The month: clouds, new shoots and wet paths

Meadows turn green and the first shoots appear as clouds race between sea and mountains. Rain feeds the land, though it can make work and travel harder. In a region of such varied landscapes, the same day feels different depending on where you are.

The voice of the sky: the Nuberu

The Nuberu is a figure in Asturian oral tradition associated with clouds and storms. In the stories, the sky can have a will of its own and someone travelling through it. Imagine someone watching a dark cloud approach over a meadow and worrying about the harvest: saying the Nuberu is abroad turns that concern into a memorable story.

Today we know that storms form through atmospheric processes. The legend does not compete with that knowledge; it preserves the imaginative way people spoke about the weather before modern forecasts.

Ogronios, an ancient reference

Ogronios is a name from the Coligny calendar, a Gaulish inscription found in France. Its translation and connection with March are uncertain. Pairing it with the Nuberu is a narrative idea for this series, not a proven ancient custom.
